It was on the 16^th day of Jan, 1998, a new year had just began, like everyone the youths of Dikchu had new plans and new dreams chalked out to be fulfilled during the year to be followed, each one with their own new year resolutions in their minds were passing their free time by having a chat and suddenly a bright idea came up to the mind of one of them and this idea lead to the birth of a new youth body that would work unconditionally for the community and the people in need. It could be anyone baring any faith, religion, sex and social stature in the society. Dikchu Youth Welfare Association is a grass root level, secular and development oriented not for profit organization popularly known as DYWA, which is convinced that sustainable community development is only possible if and when all elements such as economic, social, political, environmental and cultural are brought together and systematically “integrated”. Community development is feasible only if all segments of the society are mobilized weaker women, widows who are not treated equally, marginal farmers, jobless youth, poor children who do not receive any education.                                        

To catalyze socio-economic change in India through education of underprivileged children. Donate to as many as you can after doing due diligence! The need is so great and hence the myriad solutions to it in the form of several NGOs approaching the problem of illiteracy in India from various angles. As for DYWA for Education, the differentiating factor is that we are 100% volunteer operated in a non-hierarchical structure. All members participate in all decision-making discussions as equals. At the chapter level we are a small organization in itself - a model of a participatory democracy in action. DYWA volunteers are committed to upholding that principle while we work for our cause.

Women, HIV/AIDS is not a lottery, take no chance. Be beautiful! Be smart! Be stylish! Dikchu Youth Welfare Association (DYWA) is a non-government voluntary organization working for the integrated development of rural communities in Sikkim basically past more than one decade with a motto of “Helping people to help themselves” & “Youth for Peace & Development”. DYWA with its vast experience in implementing community development programs is considered as “Model for an integrated Community Development”.                                                                                                                                                                          

DYWA Development Training Centre (DDTC) from past half decade is rendering noble service of training and empowering thousands of development professionals and community leaders and is evolving as a “center of excellence” in Sustainable Community Development. DDTC is considered as a light house to development organizations across the state.                                                                                                   

DDTC is now pleased to announce three day-long "NGO Management" - Capacity Building Program with Field Exposure. This program is scheduled from 27^th – 29^th Jan, 2014 at DYWA Head Office, Dikchu, North Sikkim. This program is targeted and specially designed in both theoretical and practical aspects of various approaches, methodologies and tools for development practitioners working in Community Development to meet current and emerging demands to make developmental interventions more inclusive, effective, efficient and sustainable. The course is designed to be participatory and will build upon the experiences of the participants giving ample opportunities for cross learning.                                                                                                                                                                                             

The cost of the three day-long training is only Rs. 2500 per trainee. But partial scholarships are available on the first come first serve basis. The maximum intake number for the training program is only 25. Hence we request to confirm your participation at the earliest or 15 days prior to date of commencement by sending nomination of two functionaries from your organization attached to this email i.e. dywadikchu@gmail.com                                                                                                                                                                           

To encourage the participation of NGOs from different districts in capacity building programs, DDTC provides food and accommodation – (Non A/C rooms 2/3 sharing basis) at its own guest house in Dikchu. The training will also be held in the conference hall of DYWA, Dikchu, North Sikkim. At the end of the program the trainees will be provided course material in soft as well as some hard-copies also awarded certificate to each participant. Resource faculty will be assigned from Hyderabad, Assam, Chennai, Sikkim and Nepal.

Dikchu Youth Welfare Association is a grass root level, secular and development oriented not for profit organization popularly known as DYWA, which is convinced that sustainable community development is only possible if and when all elements such as economic, social, political, environmental and cultural are brought together and systematically “integrated”. Social Mobilization is a complex process and it requires meticulous and continuous efforts for any purpose. The social mobilization process is of a particular quality and character; it involves people and their behavior. These behaviors are not static and keep on changing. It is impossible to control over the behaviour of the people and subject to changing, progressing and reversing. Hence, Social Mobilization is also a continuous process according to the change of minds, attitudes and behaviors of the people for making them to involve in any development process. 

As to play role as facilitator for the disadvantage sectors, DYWA initiated facilitating inputs on perspective building, advocacy processes and professional development among rural and social groups in the region to fulfill the long felt need of the community and with the goal of changing the development era from needs to rights. DYWA aims to become as a platform to streamline the traditional asset of the region, in the process empowering women to have better control of their lives and resources and enable them to establish themselves both in the personal and professional fronts bringing about positive and visible changes in their community.

As legal status DYWA is basically registered under Indian Societies Act, XXI of 1860, in the year 2000 at Gangtok, Sikkim (India), in the same year later it has been affiliated to Nehru Yuva Kendra, Gangtok, Sikkim, which is an autonomous body of the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt of India as well as apart from those and other registration, affiliation & certification under different departments, organizations and bodies, it has again been registered under the NP System of Planning Commission, Government of India with the motto to give its partnership effort and to avail development supports formally from different ministries of India.

Mr. C. T. Lepcha  is a wholehearted  social activitist working in the field of development since last more than two decades being key facilitator of poorer community. As basic academic, he graduated in English literature from Delhi University, India. His excellence rendering youth, women, children & other socioeconomic development efforts built him to achieve District Youth Award from UNICEF. Presently and simultaneously he has been able to play role as General Secretary of DYWA as well as Principal of SPRINGDALE SCHOOL, Dikchu, which is another wing of education for children promoted by the organization DYWA. Community always appreciate and respect his motto in life i.e. "Help the poor and needy to help themselves in a sustainable manner".

DYWA is striving to provide capacity, opportunity, security and dignity to the rural poor communities by adopting its development rules in all its initiatives. DYWA gave priority to building communities prior to building projects. It follows this approach in order to ensure that development is driven by the communities themselves. The capacity building activities organized at various levels for women, youth, farmers, artisans and local people are playing transformative role, contributing towards the success efforts of DYWA in development of people. The movement initiated by DYWA to provide security, opportunity and dignity to the poor is very well recognized and fast spreading. Through its initiative communities are provided with regular counseling and motivated to understand the situation of poor and recognize them as human beings and respect them as equals. This movement which is intended to bring thousands of women into main stream of society has lead to public discussions and transformed the mindset of general public leading to change of attitude towards women & youth in the villages.                                                                                                                            

 I would like to begin by taking this opportunity as Secretary to congratulate Dikchu Youth Welfare Association, which is familiar to the people as DYWA for successful initiative of pursuing the agenda of development sector with other activities concern. Along with the efforts in pursuance of the goals, it is also heartening to see that more people have faith in the ability of it. This is quite evident in the number of women SHGs as well as the general members who decided to come into its fold with constructive support and guidance. I am happier because most of the people come from the under-served society of the state basically. The vision statement of DYWA holds good today. The thrust area of working has been to work for creating self employment avenues for the un – employed and income generation by the rural poor for self reliance. With the initiative to sustain the platform created as facilitator for the society, DYWA always realizes that the NGOs role should be professional as systematic as distinct, so that the key developmental inputs as holistic approach for economic empowerment can be run by the society itself with the concept by the people, for the people and of the people. DYWA is evolving as “Center of Excellence in Community Development” by providing not only the required knowledge and skills to the target group but also contributing for a change in their attitudes towards community development.  The relevance and effectiveness of DYWA capacity building programs is fast spreading and putting concerted efforts to further learning and sharing.                                                                                

DYWA addresses the need of NGOs to access unaffordable but much required skills and professional talent, as well as the aspiration of a section of people who believe in social change and want to contribute their time, skills and talent for the benefit of the community, but are uncertain about the approach and methods to be adopted. We act as an interface between our partner NGO’s and the aspiring individual to come together on issues which engage them to work towards a common cause. DYWA is seeing this as a privileged to work for upliftment of the rural poor and the disadvantaged and will work hard for fulfillment of our cherished objectives with zeal and dedication. The seed sown appears to have started giving flowers and we are waiting to see the unlimited fruits the true of development bears. We have patients to endure courage to work with the seemingly impossible task of mitigating suffering of the disadvantage, weaker section and the poor.                                                                                                                                                     

I take this opportunity to especially invite the donor community to join hands with DYWA to broad base the sector in a way that most areas are effectively covered through civil society efforts and that these organizations can play an important and efficient part in the state’s and country’s development. DYWA is also conscious of the fact that the sector is being invaded by a large number of players who have motivations other than public benefit and are misusing the partnership frameworks for their own vested interests. Together with the networks and voluntary organizations in the states, DYWA has initiated discussions on issues such as self-regulation and organizational discipline; it has also brought in a greater amount of rigour in its work with the government on important issues that affect partnerships. We hope to strengthen these efforts and invite the government to take advantage of DYWA’s understanding and experience in making the partnership process more effective and meaningful and directly beneficial to the poor for whom we are working. With several up & downs experiences have strengthened and given it the confidence and the staying power. It has demonstrated its utility and proven its relevance in the development environment. I am confident that the team will be able to respond effectively to demands and set the tone for partnerships’. We are pleased that most of DYWA initiatives are setting new trends in community development. The effectiveness of DYWA community development has measurable indicators which are not only satisfactory to DYWA, but also inspiration to many. As members of DYWA and of this significant framework that allows interaction and exchange of expertise, we hope to keep up communication and networks with our current and potential partners in order to realize all the set goals. We ultimately aim at achieving reform and modernization through mobilizing all capacities, as well as establishing economic reform that provides us with a true role in the national economic arena.

DYWA - An overview

DYWA’s focus has been on the development of poor. Its activities have diversified in the multiple developmental fields. The NGO is working in rural as well as urban and semi urban areas of Sikkim. Social Mobilization is a complex process and it requires meticulous and continuous efforts for any purpose. Hence, Social Mobilization is also a continuous process according to the change of minds, attitudes and behaviors of the people for making them to involve in any development process.

DYWA aims to provide people from backward areas over the opportunity to work in evaluated and credible NGOs in Sikkim. Programs are selected that best match the skills, area of interest, expertise, and time availability of the individual, with a view to strengthen and add value to the ongoing work of NGOs in social development sector. With a brief DYWAs’ vision is to influence positive social change. The mission of Joining Hands is aiming to bridge the distance between people by providing opportunities to individuals to influence positive social change through an exchange of ideas, knowledge, skills and learning by facilitating volunteering in social development sector. DYWA’s work at the grassroots level on a variety of social issues like education, health, equal rights, environment, social interaction, HIV/AIDS, child and rural development and have already positively impacted the lives of hundreds of people living in socially deprived circumstances, many women have been helped by programs defending equal rights, many children of all ages have had chances to develop through child programs and other educational activities, many lives have been improved by well-developed health and awareness programs, its ongoing investment in programs will enable us (the DYWA team) to effectively and positively keep on impacting the lives of many of most disadvantaged people.

DYWA follows a gradual and tangible path with the aim of improving people’s lives. DYWA tackled the most important and sensible issues, such as development (in its different dimensions), within permanent programs and other portfolios that include democratic transformation, socio-economic reforms and poverty. Thus, by embracing poverty and working on achieving them in the region ultimately, DYWA embodies the concept of partnership for development. Furthermore, DYWA is the way to be a major player in the social and economic transformations in the state. In this respect, DYWA’s strategy can encompass projects that address this topic in an independent manner that goes in line with this developmental challenge. In fact, this issue is not being addressed out of gender-based prejudice or intellectual opulence; rather, it finds root in human and legal requirements for tackling severe accumulated historical distortions at the social and political levels.

The logo of the association is a dove holding a twig with three leaves in its beak. The white dove symbolizing peace, development the speed in which the dove flies and the twig with three leaves indicates the unity between the three main tribes of Sikkim Lepchas, Bhutias and Nepalies. The flag of the association is blue in colour with the name and the logo on it.
